Clark, Beauchamp to present recital Feb. 14

NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University Assistant Professor of Flute Stephen Clark will join British conductor, pianist and coach Ashley Beauchamp for a recital on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. A livestream will be available at capa.nsula.edu/livestream. 

The concert concludes a tour by Clark and Beauchamp. The program is “Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune” by Claude Debussy, “Bali Moods No. 1” by Anne Boyd, “Sonatina op. 5” by Blaz Pucihar and Sonata “Undine” op. 167 by Carl Reinecke.                               

Clark is recipient of the 2016 Sir James Galway Rising Star Award, first prize winner of the 2018 IMKA Music Competition and first prize winner of the 2018 Alexander & Buono International Flute Competition, Clark has given over a thousand performances across all seven continents and made his New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall in 2018. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Royal Northern College of Music and in Switzerland with Galway.  

Recital and concerto appearances have taken him to over 120 countries and as an orchestral player, Stephen has held principal flute positions with, Philharmonia Scotland, Orchestra of Glyndebourne Opera and the National Symphony Orchestra and worked with significant conductors including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Neeme Järvi, Sir Simon Rattle, Jorma Panula and Sir Mark Elder. Stephen has recorded for Classic FM, Amadeus, Voyage, BBC, Linn and for the Naxos label. In 2015, Stephen was accepted into the Recording Academy of America and is now a voting member in the Grammys. His flute playing can be heard on several movie soundtracks including Disney’s “Mulan” and “Kung Fu Panda 3.” Stephen is author of “The Flute Gym.” He is a Yamaha Artist and plays exclusively on a 14k gold handmade Yamaha flute.  

Beauchamp studied on the Opera Course of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He previously graduated from the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, under the tutelage of Eugene Asti. Ashley is head of music and co-director of the Young Artist Programme for Waterperry Opera Festival and is musical director of the Glyndebourne Youth Opera. Beauchamp was previously head of music at Nevill Holt Opera for their 2022 and 2023 seasons.  

His recent highlights include conducting the world premiere of glass human (Fernando) for the Glyndebourne Tour, musical director for Mansfield Park (Dove) and repetiteur for Carmen (Bizet) both for Waterperry Opera and assistant conductor/head of music for La Cenerentola (Rossini) for Nevill Holt Opera. Upcoming highlights include returning to the music staff of Garsington Opera as a repetiteur for their 2024 season, and as fairies chorus master for their production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” At Waterperry, alongside his work running the Young Artist Programme, He will be head of music for their 2024 productions of “A Turn of the Screw” and “Barber of Seville.” A passionate advocate of musical education and participation, Beauchamp regularly runs workshops and projects across the U.K. introducing thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds to opera every year. He has a longstanding relationship with the learning and participation departments of the Royal Opera House and Glyndebourne, running countless participatory projects and working extensively with their respective youth opera companies.
